Renee Lighton parent workshop

Jo-Anne Dreyer, the Provincial Support Officer for DBE-E3 in the Western Cape, collaborated with facilitator Renee Lighton to host a workshop for parents of foundation phase learners at Portia Primary School in Cape Town.

The workshop focused on teaching parents to engage with children using things in the home like bottle tops, coffee jar lids, toothpaste tubes and more. The workshop profiled the importance of the parents’ role in engaging with young children in the home, and how this can assist with the development of an entrepreneurial mindset and skills for a changing world.

The workshop provided DBE-E3 the opportunity to share the vision of the Department of Basic Education: to develop learners’ competencies for increased chances of success, and to show the important role that Teachers and parents play in achieving this goal. A facilitated discussion on parent engagement foregrounded a playful, active parenting approach where children are given a voice. (We need to listen!) The Principal of Portia Primary School, Mr Velensky, was present and offered support and advice.
