Learners in the Eastern Cape develop skills to profile community issues

The Eastern Cape Education Trust (ECET) funded DBE-E3 to implement a Citizen Journalism project in four secondary schools in the OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape. DBE-E3 collaborated with Kendron Consulting and the Eastern Cape Department of Education to implement the project.

The project presented the opportunity for young people with inquiring mindsets to become more active members of their community, collecting and profiling issues of community importance, and especially sharing pride in their heritage – all through film. All video material was shot with cell phones to allow for maximum accessibility to learners at no-fee schools. The following four schools in the OR Tambo District in the Eastern Cape participated in the programme: Gobizizwe Agricultural High School, Sinolwazi Senior Secondary School, Mandela School of Science and Technology, and Ngangelizwe High School. Kendron Consulting offered a three-phase training course to upskill the learners.

Feedback from a learner:

“I am loving the course. I’ve learned so much about technical skills and life skills I did not know about, which have just been sitting on my phone waiting to be explored! I strongly feel that the trainers are doing an exceptional job in introducing this field of journalism to us… I feel anxious to learn more.”
